The board itself is really heavy. All the pieces are very detailed and are a nice weight--they do not look or feel "cheap". The sides of the board have castle mosaics "carved" into it and the gilt dragons, like the pieces, are extremely detailed and quite lovely. The actual playing board that goes on top is gold and silver with "cracking" to make it look aged/antique. This was well worth the $45!!!

The overall feel and detail on this set is amazing. The characters are so detailed as to have personality; it really feels like two sides lining up for medieval combat. I especially like the pawns appearing as armor-clad fighting men; really emphasizes that pawns have their own power and are not to be trifled with.
The big caveat- the "alabastrite" chips easily. The set hadn't been out of the box for a minute before one of the dragon heads on the board lost a small chunk. A few minutes later a pawn was beheaded... two 5-year-old boys at work. However, a few drops of super-glue and the head was easily re-attached no worse for the wear.
At first I got all worked-up trying to get the kids to be BE CAREFUL... since my son was inspired so much that he put the pieces into an imagined melee and kept clashing them together with added sound effects. Then I realized- I could easily spend $45 at the toy store outfitting him with plastic knights for play. Here he gets fun toys AND gets to learn chess.
Since then we have had many enjoyable games of chess and the small dings to the set are minimal and don't bother me. I continue to enjoy the detail and the mood each time the silver knight threatens the gold bishop.
I researched for hours before picking this set, now I'm back to order another set for my nephew, along with some superglue.

I was greatly surprised when this set came in the mail. The board is solid and heavy. It is well made and well worth the price. Both the board and pieces are full of detail. I had looked around at many other sets that were two to three times as much and have not found such a deal as this. I highly recommend this set. I am excited to give this to my son for Christmas. It is a great set that can be left sitting out on the table for display.

The set is very well built, however when it said dragon chess set I thought the pieces would be dragons. The pictures do not clearly show the pieces. But overall its worth the money!

I got this chess set from Amazon for my 7 y/o son who is a "chess maniac".... It is a gorgeous set... It is amazing the details and beauty of each piece... It is not really durable as it is made of some type of acrylic and can be broken very easily... but having some glue handy will solve the problem... by the price I paid and my son face expression when he got it "from Santa", I am very happy with it..
